Based off of the comic book Hellblazer (which I’ve not read), the movie Constantine is about an irreverent supernatural detective/exorcist type named John Constantine, who teams up with Angela Dodson to solve the mystery of her twin sister’s apparent suicide. The movie’s twisted explanation of how heaven, hell and earth are related is that angels and demons are not allowed entrance to the Earth’s plane but are able to influence people through human appearing ‘half-breeds’ (John’s term). Due to his suicide (and short time in hell) John’s outlook on life is to buy his way into heaven by exorcising enough half-breeds back to hell.

This is from one of his first conversations with Angela:

Angela Dodson: I don’t believe in the devil.
John Constantine: You should. He believes in you.

There is a fair bit of swearing, smoking and several visits to hell. Not to mention the messed up theology. It was okay, but not worth watching again. I picked it up mostly from remembering an article about the effects, which seemed pretty convincing to me. Overall, I couldn’t really recommend the film. It certainly earned its R rating.
