Friday 5 — Childhood Indulgences

This week’s Friday 5 assumes that most of us haven’t quite completely grown up or at least occasionally do childish things.

1. When did you last have a mid-day nap?
That would be last Sunday afternoon. It’s a nice time to catch up a bit on sleep over the weekend.
2. When did you last have milk and cookies?
While I was home in Indy for Thanksgiving, my mom got out ginger snaps and milk.
3. When did you last have a bubble bath?
Probably when I was a kid…haven’t had an official, proper bath in forever. Showers, though, all the time.
4. When did you last jump on the furniture?
Again, when I was a kid. I know I’m really too big to jump on furniture cause I might cause breakage.
5. When did you last play in the mud?
My brothers and I went to a friend’s the Friday night after thanksgiving and his brother-in-law had shot a deer early Saturday morning. We went off tracking it through the mud, bramble and fields…never did find it.

Friday 5 — Over

Friday 5 this week is on things that are over-this or over-that.

1. What’s a profession you believe to be overpaid?
Just about any union worker tends to be overpaid.
2. Who’s a musician you believe to be overrated?
Errr, about any rapper? I’m not really quite of the opinion that rap is quite music.
3. What in your life could stand to be overhauled?
How I spend my time when I’m not at work. Tend to be doing stuff online like blogging or other social media things.
4. What’s something interesting you recently overheard?
I can never seem to remember what I overhear other people say.
5. Who is the most overextended person you know?
Ummm, I can’t think of one in particular though I’m sure there are several who could be listed. I feel pretty overextended myself.

Friday 5 — How

This week’s Friday 5 asks the H in WWWWWH — Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How.

1. How’s your health?
So far so good.
2. How was your day?
A bit fractured over several projects and things, but overall, a good day. Especially with Blogfest after work. Hanging out with people is fun and meeting new people is an interesting challenge for me.
3. How’s the weather?
I said on Twitter that it, “Looks like the weather can’t decide if it’s going to snow today or not. There was a white-out just a minute ago and now just cloudy.” Then shortly after that the sun was poking through the clouds. No matter what the visible weather was, it was on the cold side of 30°. And the roads were a bit icy and slippery.
4. How do you expect to get anywhere in life with an attitude like that?
Good question. I like to think that I have a fairly good attitude most of the time. But more often than not, rather than be proactive in doing something, I tend toward the passive, the just let things happen stance.
5. How many people made you smile today?
Something like five or six, probably more.

It’s Your Turn

RebelliousFlaw asks: Below are 10 words. I would like you to take these 10 words and write the first word that comes to mind which you associate with the words.

These are mine, feel free to copy these ten words to your blog and do the same—link back so we can see your word associations.

1. Pineapple — upside-down (cake)
2. Hammer — saw
3. Guitar — string
4. Telephone — ring
5. Swiss Army Knife — useful
6. Hamper — clothes
7. Dolphin — graceful
8. Lighthouse — rock
9. Camera — pictures
10. Oven Mitt — protection

Friday 5 — Misuses

This week’s Friday 5 is all about using stuff in ways they weren’t originally meant to be used but come in handy that way anyhow.

1. When did you last use the edge of a coin (or a knife blade) as a screwdriver?
A couple weeks ago: the batteries in my bike light had gone kaput and a penny is the best way to open the battery compartment.
2. When did you last use a wire coat-hanger to break into a car?
It sure seems like I’ve done this in the past, but maybe not. I kinda learned to be a bit more careful when trying to unlock a car some time ago: I was attempting to be helpful and ended up breaking the window accidentally.
3. When did you last use food or drink as medication?
Not sure.
4. When did you last use your cellular telephone as a flashlight?
Actually fairly often since the battery in my Photon Micro-light has died. The hallway when I enter my apartment is rather dark and I keep my bike there (for now) so, inexplicably, rather than turn on the hall light I’ve used my cell to light the way. Or just fumble along the side of the wall so as to avoid my bike.
5. When did you last use a paper clip for any purpose other than to clip paper?
Most likely, as a CD-ROM drive tray ejector. That is, unbend it and poke into the small hole on the front of the drive to eject a stuck disc.

Friday 5 — Middles

Friday 5 for this week is as middle of the road as Friday fives go. =)

1. What usually marks the middle of your day?
My coworkers querying each other about what or where lunch is to be.
2. From whom (or to whom) was your most recent middle-of-the-night phone call?
Probably one of my brothers calling to get computer help or gas prices.
3. On what social, political, economic, or moral issue are you in the middle of the road?
I can’t really think of an issue I’m middle ground on. Maybe there is and it’s just not coming to mind. Those sorts of things I pretty much have a definitive opinion. Now making life decisions, that’s another matter altogether. I tend to waffle and weigh the pros and cons too long and end up either making a decision by default or wondering if the decision I did make was really the best one.
4. How likely are you to give someone your middle finger?
Zero percent likely. Profanity and rude gestures aren’t in my vocabulary. There’s always some better way to express dismay or dislike.
5. When were you last caught in the middle of a disagreement that really had nothing to do with you?
Probably something between my siblings and my parents. Since I’m not at home disagreements generally don’t effect me, though I may end up hearing both sides.

Friday 5 — Hacked

Here’s the Friday Five from September 26 since October 3 was MIA until Saturday and I didn’t get to it a week ago.

1. When did someone last break something of yours?
When moving into my current apartment, I had a 2’x4′ mirror that got put sideways in the back seat of my car. In the process of filling the rest of the seat, driving the half mile to the new apartment and unloading, the mirror ended up getting broken. No big deal, it was free to me anyway.
2. When did you last play hackysack, if ever?
Probably a few years ago – tried and failed.
3. What was your most dramatic haircut like?
That would probably have to be what I have now: a ponytail. Until I moved out to Pittsburgh three years ago, I kept it pretty short and simple.
4. Hacking is basically breaking through the security that protects a computer or a website. What’s the closest you’ve come to doing something similar in real life?
Because of what I do, hacking for real is not too far out of the picture. I’ve built several Linux based computers from scratch. For example, just to see if I could do it, I tried to figure out what was necessary to crack a wifi password. Unfortunately, the wireless card I have isn’t able to actively detect traffic so I couldn’t get it to work.
5. In the world of stand-up comedy, a hack is a comic who steals jokes from other comics. Have you ever known a hack in your own field?
To some extent, anyone who is a web designer is a bit of a hack. We look at how other people make their sites and ‘borrow’ what we need to make our site work.
